About Toastmasters

Toastmasters International is a non-profit organisation that helps people become more confident communicators and leaders. Founded in 1924, Toastmasters has grown into a global network of clubs where members practice public speaking, develop leadership skills, and build self-confidence in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

Each club meets regularly and follows a structured format that includes prepared speeches, impromptu speaking exercises (called Table Topics), and constructive feedback. Whether you’re looking to overcome a fear of public speaking, polish your presentation skills, or take on leadership roles, Toastmasters offers a practical and encouraging path to personal growth—at your own pace.

With thousands of clubs in more than 140 countries, Toastmasters welcomes people from all walks of life. No matter your background or experience, there’s a place for you at the table.

The Toastmasters Mission
A statement of shared values

Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater selfconfidence and personal growth.

Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club’s purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.

History of how Toastmasters started

1905 – Building the foundation

Bloomington, Illinois, YMCA Education Director Ralph C. Smedley sees a need for enhancing public speaking skills, and organizes a Toastmasters Club, referencing the role of a “toastmaster” at banquets. The club’s first meeting is held March 24, 1905, in Bloomington, Illinois. The club disbands when Smedley moves away for a job promotion.

1924 – The official start of Toastmasters

On October 22, approximately two dozen men meet in the basement of the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, which marks the birth of today’s Toastmasters.
